Alzheimer鈥檚 disease is the leading cause of dementia, affecting approximately 6.7 million people in the United States over the age of 65, according to the Centers for Disease Control. El Paso County, where 83% of the population identifies as Hispanic, ranks 10th among U.S. counties with populations over 10,000 for Alzheimer鈥檚 prevalence, according to recent Alzheimer鈥檚 Association research. Despite these alarming statistics, there is currently no noninvasive, early detection method for Alzheimer鈥檚 disease.
The students will begin their first day in their respective programs July 1 at prestigious residency and graduate programs across the nation, including Yale University, Rutgers University, the University of Washington, One Brooklyn Health, and the University of Oklahoma.
The 14th annual Medventure for Your Future, an exploration of all things health science related for middle schoolers, took place last Saturday, Jan. 25, on the Texas Tech Health El Paso campus. Designed to inspire middle school students from our U.S.-Mexico Borderplex region, the day-long event provided a unique, hands-on introduction to careers in health care and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).
The spring 2025 nursing cohort comprises 76 students, including 67 from our Borderplex. By growing our own health care heroes, the Hunt School of Nursing is addressing the critical nursing shortage and tackling the unique health challenges of the U.S.-Mexico border region. Since its establishment, the school has graduated more than 1,500 nurses, with 90% remaining in the area to practice.
